Message from Senator Sherry Rehman, Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party on International Equal Pay Day
By Imtiaz Ali Abbasi (Islamabad)
Today, the world is celebrating International Equal Pay Day, stated Sherry Rehman.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the gender pay gap and to demand equal pay for equal work, she emphasized.
International Equal Pay Day holds significant importance in the context of Pakistan, where women make up nearly half of the population, Sherry Rehman noted.
According to the International Labour Organization, women earn 20% less than men globally, while in Pakistan, this gap has widened to 34%, she pointed out.
The World Bank reports that women's participation in the workforce in Pakistan is 23.18%, compared to 76.82% for men, Sherry Rehman added.
In some sectors, this pay disparity is especially pronounced, where Pakistani women earn 45% less than their male counterparts, she remarked.
This gender-based wage discrimination exacerbates economic inequality, Sherry Rehman stated.
Eliminating this gap is essential for empowering women and establishing a just society, she stressed.
The Pakistan Peoples Party has actively worked for women's rights and economic empowerment, Sherry Rehman said.
These efforts include ensuring workplace safety and access to education and vocational training for women, she highlighted.
However, urgent and sustained efforts are needed to eliminate this wage gap in order to achieve gender equality, Sherry Rehman concluded.
