We Are Almost Close to Reaching Consensus on Constitutional Amendment’

Tando Allahyar: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) supremo Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated on Monday that he is not in favor of holding protests during the important Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

While addressing a gathering, Rehman expressed optimism about reaching a consensus on the proposed constitutional amendment. He noted, “We are almost close to reaching the consensus on the constitutional amendment. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and JUI-F have shared their respective drafts for this amendment.”

Rehman mentioned his plans to meet with key political figures, stating, “I will meet Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari tomorrow and then Nawaz Sharif subsequently.” He also indicated that he intends to hold discussions with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders.

Just days prior, Rehman urged the opposition to refrain from staging protests during the upcoming SCO summit, which is expected to take place in Pakistan. In a press conference in Islamabad, he highlighted, “The parliament’s role will be increased in terms of appointing judges with the abolishment of the 19th amendment.”

Rehman asserted, “The government should know that our narrative becomes popular in the public,” emphasizing the importance of legislative processes. He added, “The parliament’s role had been diminished due to the judicial reforms introduced in the 19th Amendment.”

He concluded by stating, “The consensus can be reached on a suitable draft, but there is a condition of accepting our draft.”
