The National Assembly and Senate are set to convene today, though the much-anticipated 26th Constitutional Amendment is notably absent from the official agenda. Both houses are expected to discuss other pressing legislative matters, with the National Assembly scheduled to meet at 6:00 PM and the Senate at 3:00 PM.
The government coalition, which requires 224 votes to pass the amendment, currently holds 215 seats. This leaves them nine votes short of the necessary two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, highlighting the ongoing political tension. Additionally, the absence of the Speaker's vote complicates matters further for the ruling coalition, which must now navigate a precarious political landscape to secure support from opposition factions.
The opposition bloc, with eight members from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), continues to add complexity to the situation. Despite discussions and attempts to build consensus, the amendment is likely to spark contentious debate when it is eventually tabled.
