The National Assembly successfully passed the long-awaited 26th Constitutional Amendment early Monday, securing a two-thirds majority. The vote tally stood at 225 in favor, with only 12 members voting against the bill. This marks a significant milestone for the current government in its efforts to achieve legislative reform.
The National Assembly session has been postponed until Tuesday at 5:00 pm, where further discussions are expected to continue.
Meanwhile, the signing ceremony for the 26th Constitutional Amendment Act Bill is scheduled to take place at the Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad on Monday at 6:00 am. President Asif Ali Zardari is expected to formally sign the bill, marking the final step in its enactment after its approval by both the Senate and the National Assembly.
During the key session, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar highlighted the establishment of a judicial commission that will include top legal officials and senior judges. "The Attorney General and representatives from the Pakistan Bar will also be part of the Commission," Tarar confirmed, adding that "three of the most senior judges from the Supreme Court will join the judicial commission," which will be led by the Chief Justice.
Tarar also praised PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for their pivotal roles in reaching consensus on the draft.
Earlier, after extensive delays and debates, the Senate approved the 26th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2024, endorsing 22 clauses of the legislation. A diverse parliamentary committee had been reviewing various proposals, which culminated in today's approval.
The PTI, SIC, and MWM have refrained from voting on the amendment, while Barrister Gohar Ali Khan of PTI reiterated his party's decision not to support the bill.
