Federal Minister for Information, Attaullah Tarar, addressed the National Assembly during the question hour, responding to supplementary questions posed by assembly members. The minister provided updates on various ongoing projects and the vision for transforming Islamabad into a Smart City.
According to Minister Tarar, development work in Sector I-16 is progressing, with electric buses expected to connect feeder routes between Sector I-16 and metro stations on the N-5 Highway by January 2025. He highlighted the operational metro service already available in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and the airport area, noting the government’s commitment to extending these services further.
Tarar also mentioned that the Master Plan for Islamabad was presented to the federal cabinet in January, underlining the importance of modernizing the city with smart city features. He stated, "The world is moving towards smart cities, and Islamabad, as a Safe City, should incorporate these advanced features." The Minister assured that each sector in Islamabad is being developed with comprehensive planning.
In line with the Smart City initiative, an application named "My Islamabad" will soon be launched, providing residents access to essential services. Through international tendering, the government aims to secure consulting services from international consultants as early as possible, enhancing the city’s planning and development.
Addressing a common concern, Tarar clarified that there are no plans to merge Rawalpindi’s areas into Islamabad. He encouraged citizens to submit any suggestions for the Smart City app to the relevant committee and assured that facilities like bill payments and various services would be accessible through the app.
