Islamabad – The senior leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), including Senator Sherry Rehman, Syed Naveed Qamar, and Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, engaged in a series of consultations today regarding the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court. This initiative is a key reform outlined in the 2006 Charter of Democracy, which proposes a court based on the equality of provinces with jurisdiction under Article 184 of the Constitution.

In a meeting with President Ahmed Bilal Mehboob of the Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT), Senator Rehman and MNA Naveed Qamar reiterated the PPP’s support for a dedicated constitutional court to effectively address constitutional matters. The proposed court aims to enhance provincial representation and equality, aligning with Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision of upholding the principles established in the 2006 Charter of Democracy.

This reform is seen as part of the unfinished agenda envisioned by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, ensuring that no government can exploit the judiciary for political purposes. The PPP does not endorse any person-specific legislation and remains committed to fulfilling the long-standing demands of the Pakistan Bar Council and the legal community.

Later in the day, the PPP leadership, including Senator Rehman and Secretary General Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, met with the Secretary General of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Haris Khalique. Senior members of the Women’s Action Forum (WAF), including Nasreen Azhar and Khushal Khattak, were also present.

Senator Rehman emphasized the importance of inclusive consultations, stating, “The purpose of these meetings is to ensure that all relevant stakeholders are taken on board and that this initiative receives wide acceptance, similar to the 18th Amendment.” She affirmed that the PPP is committed to establishing the Federal Constitutional Court through consensus-building and consultations with all key stakeholders.

Senator Sherry Rehman Elected President of Pakistan National Group of the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA)

In a separate development, Senator Sherry Rehman was unanimously elected as President of the Pakistan National Group of the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) during a meeting chaired by Syed Naveed Qamar, President of the global PGA network. The meeting included parliamentarians from both ruling and opposition parties, who were also appointed as office bearers of the National Group.

Expressing her gratitude for the trust placed in her by fellow parliamentarians, Senator Rehman said, “I am deeply honored to have been elected as President of Pakistan’s National Group of the PGA. This platform represents a unique opportunity for Pakistani lawmakers to engage with global challenges, and I look forward to working with colleagues from across the aisle to promote meaningful action.”

The meeting also focused on the upcoming 45th Annual Forum of the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) and the 13th Consultative Assembly of Parliamentarians on the International Criminal Court (CAP-ICC), which will take place in Islamabad on October 28-29, 2024. These international gatherings will gather legislators from around the world to discuss key issues related to the rule of law, global governance, and the International Criminal Court.
