The Punjab government has announced a groundbreaking initiative to address rising air pollution and ensure employment for the unemployed population.
Under the new scheme, an e-taxi service will be introduced, and online taxi drivers will be provided with vehicles at an attractive package. These electric taxis will not only reduce air pollution, but also lead to economic benefits for their drivers.
Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan stated that the scheme will involve offering a large portion of online taxis with electric vehicles (EVs). These EVs will be made available to drivers through attractive packages, either on down payment or easy installments.
Bilal Akbar Khan explained that the electric taxis would not only help reduce air pollution but also result in monetary benefits for the drivers. "Our studies indicate that drivers will save up to 40% on fuel costs by switching to electric vehicles," he said.
He said the scheme is being introduced in response to the growing demand for online taxi services in Punjab and the pressing need to curb pollution in urban areas, particularly Lahore.
Key features of e-taxi scheme
- Eco-friendly fleet: Transition to electric vehicles will significantly lower emissions and improve air quality.
- Affordable ownership: EVs will be provided to drivers on down payments or easy installment plans.
- Economic relief: Reduced reliance on petrol will lead to higher earnings for drivers.
- Increased employment: The scheme will create job opportunities for unemployed individuals.
Bilal Akbar Khan emphasized the provincial government’s commitment to improving environmental conditions while fostering economic growth.
