Former Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Khalid Khurshid, has been sentenced to 34 years in prison by a Gilgit Anti-Terrorism Court. The court also imposed a fine of Rs0.6 million, finding him guilty of issuing threats against security officials that could lead to serious consequences.

Details of the Verdict

The case, presided over by Judge Rehmat Shah, concluded with a directive for the Inspector General (IG) of Police to arrest Khurshid and transfer him to jail. Additionally, the Director General (DG) of NADRA has been ordered to block Khurshid’s identity card.

Khurshid, who had been absconding from court hearings, was not present during the verdict. The charges relate to an incident on May 26, 2024, when Khurshid allegedly threatened security agencies and high-ranking officials, including the Chief Secretary and Chief Election Commissioner of Gilgit-Baltistan, during a PTI protest rally.

Background and Controversies

This is not the first legal trouble for Khalid Khurshid.

  • August 28, 2024: A Gilgit court issued an arrest warrant for Khurshid over his failure to appear in a case involving a fake degree.
  • July 2023: The Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Court disqualified Khurshid after determining his degree was fabricated, sparking significant political and public scrutiny.

The recent conviction highlights mounting concerns about the accountability of public figures and the potential risks of inciting unrest in the region.

Broader Implications

Khalid Khurshid’s conviction represents a pivotal moment in Gilgit-Baltistan’s political history, underlining the state’s commitment to enforcing the rule of law and ensuring that public officials are held accountable for their actions.

Authorities have assured the public that the stability and peace of the region remain a top priority.
