Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, Sayed Imran Ahmed Shah, along with Secretary Mr. Navid Ahmed Shaikh, visited the headquarters of Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (PBM) in Islamabad today, where they were briefed in detail on the organization's extensive welfare operations.
The Managing Director of PBM shared that more than 150,000 patients suffering from critical diseases have been granted financial assistance totaling Rs. 15.4 billion in the last five years. Additionally, over 32,000 students from Grade 11 to PhD level have received scholarships worth Rs. 970 million, ensuring educational opportunities for underprivileged youth.
For women empowerment, PBM has established 165 Women Empowerment Centres, training more than 475,000 women in various skills. Children’s welfare also remains a priority, with 46 Sweet Homes and 160 Child Labour Schools providing care, education, and rehabilitation across the country.
Under the “Food for All” initiative, 30 food vans are serving meals daily, while 17 Panahgahs have extended shelter to over 9.7 million individuals. PBM is also supporting persons with disabilities through artificial limbs, assistive devices, and financial grants. The first-ever Senior Citizens Home for elderly care has also been set up in Lahore.
Minister Imran Ahmed Shah praised PBM’s performance in health and education, but urged improved delivery in other sectors. He directed that surprise monthly inspections be conducted at welfare centers including Panahgahs and Sweet Homes to ensure transparency and efficiency.
The Minister also emphasized the importance of modern training for instructors at Women Empowerment Centres and Child Labour Schools. He proposed that certificates be standardized to meet international skill recognition levels.
He further directed that regular audits and impact assessments be carried out for all projects. Stressing the need for digitisation, he recommended shifting budgetary focus more towards health and education.
He concluded by highlighting the importance of expanding child protection centres in former FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and establishing more thalassemia centres across the country.
“To make social safety programs effective, sustainable, and transparent, we must combine monitoring, training, and technology,” the Minister asserted.
