As the world marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, Senator Sherry Rehman, Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change, has called for urgent action on transitioning to renewable energy and addressing the climate crisis.

This year's Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” urges global unity behind renewable energy. Senator Rehman emphasized that Pakistan, being highly vulnerable to climate change, must lead by example.

“Earth Day is more than reflection—it’s a global call to action,” she said.
“Our resolve is rising with the climate crisis. Pakistan is stepping up with real solutions.”

Senator Rehman highlighted Pakistan’s impressive rise as the sixth-largest solar energy market in the world, with $2.1 billion worth of solar panels imported in the past year alone, driven by increased electricity tariffs.

She cited Pakistan’s international climate goals:

  • 60% of energy from renewables by 2030

  • Net-zero emissions by 2050

  • 30% electric vehicles by 2030

  • Complete ban on imported coal

“Already, 55% of our electricity is clean. This is the moment to align policies with our energy future,” she added.

Senator Rehman also praised efforts like the Sindh Solar Energy Project (SSEP), delivering affordable solar systems to 500,000 households through BISP, ensuring energy justice.

In urban transport, she acknowledged Sindh’s electric bus service in Karachi, which now includes 500 fully electric buses, as a milestone in public transport modernization and air quality improvement.

“We no longer have time to wait. Earth Day reminds us—the power to protect the planet lies in our hands,” she concluded.
