In a strong political development, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has voiced serious objections over the construction of new canals on the Indus River, demanding the immediate convening of a Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting to address the issue transparently.

This comes after senior PPP leader and former senator Sehar Kamran posted a powerful statement on her official X (Twitter) handle, reaffirming PPP's firm opposition to any project that undermines Sindh's water rights. In her tweet, she reminded the public that President Asif Ali Zardari, during his recent address to the Joint Sitting of the Parliament, clearly rejected the controversial canal initiatives—an address now part of the official record.

“President @AAliZardari has always kept national interests and the unity of all federating units supreme. As Head of State, he categorically rejected the controversial canals in his address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament—it’s on record,” she stated.

She further alleged that those misleading the public on this issue are united in their efforts to malign the PPP, referring to their alliance during the NA-213 Umarkot by-election. According to her, these forces have a shared agenda that revolves around attacking the PPP, but the party remains committed to protecting the rights of the people.

“The government’s reluctance to call a CCI meeting raises questions—why are they scared to address Sindh’s concerns transparently?” she asked.

Using the hashtag #NoMoreCanalsOnIndus, Sehar Kamran demanded that the government resolve the issue through proper constitutional means rather than delaying action.

The PPP leadership has made it clear that they will not compromise on the rights of Sindh, and any attempt to bypass the constitutional structure of federalism will be resisted with full political force.
